This drawing shows the
application of one of Leonardo’s pieces of advice: “
Quickly sketch the plan of your figures and then dedicate
yourself to the movements appropriate to the mental state of
the creature in your picture rather than to the beauty and
the perfection of their individual parts. “ The position
of the Child in the upper drawing recalls the studies for a
Virgin Mary by Leonardo found in Windsor. The lower drawing,
however, comes from the Virgin Mary of the Towers by
Raffaello but Cesare has mentally reconstructed it rather
that just copying. It is dated around 1513.

Si vede in questo disegno l’applicazione di uno dei consigli di
Leonardo: “Traccia velocemente il progetto delle tue figure e
per prima cosa dedicati ai movimenti appropriati allo stato
mentale delle creature che formano il tuo quadro, piuttosto che
alla bellezza e alla perfezione delle loro parti.” La
posizione del Bambino nel disegno superiore richiama quella
negli studi per una Madonna di Leonardo conservati a Windsor. Il
disegno inferiore, invece è tratto dalla Madonna della torre di
Raffaello; ma Cesare ha ricostruito mentalmente, più che
copiato. La datazione si aggira intorno al 1513.
