coloured prepared paper, 15 x 12,3 cm.

The head leans slightly
to the right, hair divided at the centre and flowing. The
fact that all Boltraffio’s drawings of the Virgin Mary
have their eyes lowered leads us to believe that this
drawing was possibly a study for a portrait or a
mythological theme. Whilst the hairstyle and veil are
elaborate and “drawn”, the planes of the face are left
to the play on light. Dated at the end of 1400.

Testa leggermente inclinata sulla destra, capelli divisi al centro e
ricadenti. Tutte le Madonne di Boltraffio hanno gli occhi
abbassati, dal che si può supporre che questo disegno fosse uno
studio per un ritratto o per un tema mitologico. Mentre
capigliatura e velo sono elaborati e “disegnati”, i piani
del volto sono affidati al gioco della luce. Databile verso la
fine del 1400.
