This was drawn by someone
left-handed and may be compared to the head of the Virgin in
St. Anne in the Louvre. Attribution was made difficult by
successive major interventions, noted above all in the
outline of the nostrils and chin. An alternative name to
that of Leonardo is that of one of his late followers,
Bernardino Lanino. Berenson believes it to be a signed
drawing dated 1501.

Il disegno è opera di un mancino, e può essere rapportato alla testa
della Vergine nella Sant’Anna del Louvre. L’attribuzione è
resa difficoltosa dai grossi interventi successivi, notevoli
soprattutto nei contorni dalle narici al mento. Un nome proposto
in alternativa a Leonardo è stato quello di un suo tardo
seguace, Bernardino Lanino. Per Berenson è un disegno
autografo, e lo data 1501.
