This
is a sketch for the staging of a theatrical representation,
the Mask of Danae by
Baldassarre Taccone, chancellor of Lodovico Sforza. The
writing indicates the names of the actors and the parts they
play. The numbers joined by unequal lines are a mystery but
they might be beats, measures or movements according to a
plan known only to Leonardo. The writing besides the drawing
in the niche is instructions for the conclusion of the
opera. The actors “ are amazed by the new star and they
adore her and the music ends the festivities.”

tratta di uno schizzo per l’allestimento di una
rappresentazione teatrale, la Maschera
di Danae di Baldassarre Taccone, cancelliere di Lodovico
Sforza. Le scritte indicano i nomi degli attori e dei personaggi
che interpretano; sulle cifre congiunte da linee diseguali regna
ancora il mistero, potendo indicare delle battute, dei tempi o
dei movimenti, secondo schemi noti solo a Leonardo. Le righe di
scrittura accanto al disegno della nicchia sono istruzioni per
il finale dell’opera: gli attori “si meravigliano per la
nuova stella, e l’adorano inginocchiandosi, e con la musica si
conclude la festa”.
