Studies
for a Nativity scene with exercises in composition. The
upper drawing in metallic point shows a pointed roof over
the Virgin’s head. The drawings in the bottom left and
that in the centre, with a Saint John, seem to anticipate
the famous Virgin of the Rocks. The central figures of the
Child and St. John are curious in that they seem to be
playing hide and seek behind the Virgin’s drapes. It is
one of Leonardo’s most frequently reproduced drawings. It
is dated around 1490 but for some it was drawn at least ten
years earlier.

Studi per una Natività,
esercitazioni di composizione. Il disegno superiore, a punta
metallica, mostra un tetto aguzzo sopra la Vergine. Quello in
basso a sinistra e ancor più quello al centro, con un San
Giovannino, sembrano anticipare la celebre Vergine
delle rocce. Sono curiose le figure, al centro, del Bambino
e di San Giovannino che sembrano giocare a nascondersi dietro il
panneggio della Vergine. Uno dei disegni di Leonardo riprodotti
più di frequente. Datato intorno al 1490, ma per alcuni viene
fatto risalire agli inizi del decennio anteriore.
