Leonardo
da Vinci’s studies for a moving bear in particular a front
paw and a seated nude female.

The
bear was drawn twice, first using a fine point and then with
a larger one. The bear is ambling. The female figure is
rapidly sketched, visible below the bear when turning the
page. The anatomy of the bear has been criticised for the
lack of fur, the paw’s fur is facing up and not down, the
position of the paw seems to be that of a dog not a
plantigrade. In 1495 Leonardo referred to the “terrible
bears” found in Valchiavenna in the area around Lake Como
but it is not known if he actually saw them. The drawing has
been dated between 1487 and 1490.

L’orso è stato
disegnato due volte, prima con una punta sottile e quindi con
una più grossa. Il passo è quello dell’ambio. La figura
femminile è schizzata rapidamente, visibile sotto l’orso
girando il foglio. L’anatomia dell’orso è stata criticata
per la pelliccia scarsa, i peli della zampa rivolti all’insù
e non cadenti, la postura della zampa che sembra quella di un
canide e non di un plantigrado. Nel 1495 Leonardo aveva riferito
di “terribili orsi” presenti in Valchiavenna, nella regione
del lago di Como, ma non è detto che li abbia scorti da vicino.
Il disegno viene però datato tra il 1487 e il 1490.
