Carlo
Pedretti, one of the most authoritative scholars of
Leonardo’s works, has demonstrated using X-rays of the
head of the Virgin of the Annunciation in the Uffizi that it
is an exact copy of this drawing even if there is no doubt
that it is of a “young man”. The same boy in profile and
not three-quarters appears in a fragment in Windsor. The
shading, clearly by a left-handed person, seems approximate
and indicates an early work. The date may be about 1478.

Pedretti, uno tra i più autorevoli studiosi leonardeschi, ha
dimostrato che la radiografia della testa della Vergine dell’Annunciazione
degli Uffizi è una copia esatta di questo disegno, anche se non
c’è dubbio che si tratti di “un” giovane. Lo stesso
ragazzo, visto di profilo e non di tre quarti, appare in un
frammento di Windsor. Le ombreggiature, chiaramente di mano
mancina, sembrano approssimate e fanno pensare a un’opera
giovanile. La data può essere intorno al 1478.
