The attribution of this drawing is complex, even if today it has
been accepted. Discarded by Berenson, it was judged by others
(Brizio) to be “the heaviest and worst of all Leonardo’s
signatures.” It is not well-conserved: the charcoal lines have
been changed by a tracing done with a metallic point to transfer
the drawing onto another sheet. The hand of Leonardo can be
recognized in the swift “repentance” in indicating the
position of Hercules’ arms. Even the date is uncertain: around
1505-6, or later, around 1508.

di attribuzione complessa, anche se oggi accettata. Scartato da
Berenson, giudicato da altri (Brizio) di “segno più greve e pesto
degli autografi vinciani”. Non è ben conservato: il tratto a
carboncino è stato alterato da un ricalco fatto con una punta
metallica per trasferire il disegno su un altro foglio. La mano di
Leonardo sarebbe da riconoscere nei veloci “pentimenti”
nell’indicare la posizione delle braccia di Ercole. Anche la
datazione è incerta: intorno al 1505-6, o dopo, intorno al 1508.
