According to Berenson, Leonardo “faithfully recorded the visions that appeared before his eyes without trying to make them real as he had with the Mona Lisa, a dream he had nurtured throughout his life”. The look is simple and natural, in no way enigmatic. The whole cartoon was probably finished in a single session. The lady is Isabella d’Este who posed for Leonardo in Mantova in February 1500. This is the only remaining signed work that shows traces of pastels. Most of Leonardo’s drawings were in pen, whilst charcoal and white lead were for the final stages of the preparation.

Secondo Berenson Leonardo “registrò fedelmente la visione che apparve ai suoi occhi e non tentò nemmeno d’incarnarvi, come nella Gioconda, sogni nutriti durante tutta la vita”. Lo sguardo è semplice e naturale, per nulla enigmatico. L’intero cartone fu probabilmente eseguito in una sola seduta. La gentildonna ritratta è Isabella d’Este, che posò per Leonardo, a Mantova, nel febbraio del 1500. Si tratta della sola opera autografa (rimasta) in cui si trovano tracce di pastello; la maggior parte dei disegni di Leonardo sono eseguiti a penna; carboncino e biacca erano destinati alle ultime fasi della preparazione.
