Both Selvatico and Berenson consider it to be one of Leonardo’s drawings, but Berenson thinks it might possibly be by Melzi, who in the Holy Family shows an almost identical young man. It is, however, too modest a drawing to be by Leonardo. Of interest is the angle of the feet, repeated in the study for St. Christopher. (n. 58)

Selvatico e Berenson lo includono tra i disegni di Leonardo, ma il secondo ipotizza anche la mano del Melzi, che in una Sacra Famiglia mostra un fanciullo quasi identico. È comunque un disegno troppo modesto per essere attribuito a Leonardo; si notino i pentimenti nella realizzazione del piede, ripetuti nello studio per San Cristoforo (scheda 58).
