This is retained to be a study for the never painted “Adoration of the Shepherds”, dated 1478, “ a magnificent example of early genius by Leonardo”(Heyendreich). Berenson thought that the drawing might not have been a preparatory sketch for a commissioned work, but simply an exercise in composition, a testimony to the necessity for Leonardo to immediately translate his creative visions and observations on the body’s movement into images.

Viene ritenuto lo studio per un’Adorazione dei Pastori mai realizzata e datato intorno al 1478, “magnifico esempio dell’ingegno giovanile di Leonardo” (Heydenreich). Per Berenson il disegno può anche non essere uno schizzo preparatorio per un’opera commissionata, ma semplicemente un’esercitazione compositiva, testimonianza della necessità di Leonardo di tradurre immediatamente in immagini le sue visioni creative e le sue osservazioni sul movimento dei corpi.
