THE
FUNERAL OF ST. MARTIN
This
scene represents the funeral of St. Martin inside a Gothic chapel. The
legend does not offer the identity of the haloed monk and the officiating
bishop. Only the latter has been tentatively identified by Toesca as St.
Ambrose. There appears a strong contrast between the horizontal and
vertical elements. Indeed, the columns, the three-mullioned windows, the
candles and various figures are all contrasted with the dead body of the
saint.

In questa scena sono raffigurate le esequie di San Martino, che si
svolgono all’interno di una cappella gotica.
La Leggenda non offre le identità
del monaco aureolato e del vescovo officiante. Solo quest’ultimo è
stato identificato dal Toesca, non senza suscitare dei dubbi, con
Sant’Ambrogio. Si rileva, in questa scena una forte contrapposizione tra
elementi orizzontali e verticali. Infatti, alla salma del santo si
contrappongono le colonne tortili, le trifore, i ceri e le varie figure.
