THE
DEATH OF ST. MARTIN
In
the centre is the body of the saint on the ground with around him the
altar-boys, the worshipers and a priest intent on the rites of the dead.
At the top the soul of St. Martin rises to heaven accompanied by four
angels. The heads of the worshippers and the altar-boys seem to form a
clear oblique line from right to left balanced by two knights isolated in
the tabernacle at the far right. Outside this geometry of figures are two
suffering altar-boys who, placed figuratively, seem to be nearer the saint.

In centro il corpo del santo disteso a terra e tutt’intorno a lui i
chierici, i fedeli e un sacerdote intento nel rito dei defunti.
In alto, l’anima di San Martino
che sale in cielo, accompagnata da quattro angeli.
Le
teste dei fedeli e dei chierici sembrano formare una netta linea obliqua
in calando da sinistra verso destra equilibrata poi dai due cavalieri,
isolati nell’edicoletta all’estrema destra. Al di fuori da questa
geometria di figure sono i due chierici dolenti, i quali, per nessi
figurativi, sembrano i più vicini al santo.
