MARTIN DIVIDES HIS CLOAK WITH THE POOR
This
scene tells of the anecdote in which one rigid winter day St. Martin was
approached by a badly dressed beggar frozen with cold. Seeing Jesus Christ
embodied in the poor man, St. Martin divided his cloak in two with his
sword and offered half to the beggar. A detailed analysis of the fresco
after it was accidentally torn allowed the recovery of the ruddle and the
discovery that the original drawing was different from the present one. Of
interest is how in the representation of the horse and the painting there
is an increasingly refined style in respect to the ruddle, typical of
Martini’s art.

Si narra in questa scena
l’aneddoto in cui San Martino, in una rigida giornata invernale, viene
avvicinato da un mendicante infreddolito e malvestito. San Martino, avendo
visto Gesù Cristo incarnato nel povero, con un colpo di spada divide il
mantello in due parti uguali, offrendone una al mendicante.
Da
un’analisi approfondita dell’affresco, eseguita a causa di uno
strappo, è stato possibile recuperare la sinopia, la quale ha reso
evidente le differenze del disegno originario
rispetto al dipinto attuale, e come la scena si svolgesse nella posizione
opposta a quella attuale. Si è notato poi, soprattutto nella
raffigurazione del cavallo, come il dipinto, rispetto alla sinopia, abbia
acquisito una maggior finezza stilistica, tipica dell’arte di Martini.
