INNOCENCE III’ s DREAM
The fresco depicts Pope Innocence III while dreaming of the almost ruined, Lateran basilica but sustained by a poor man wearing St. Francis’ clothes. It is considered to be by Giotto, himself. The figure of the Saint in this part is better conserved than in the previous one in that the monk’s habit is completely painted in the style of a fresco whilst the blue dress with which he had been portrayed up till then had been painted with dry lapis-lazuli in order to use as little as possible of the precious powder.

L’affresco raffigura papa Innocenzo III mentre sogna la basilica lateranense prossima alla rovina, ma sostenuta da un poverello nelle vesti di San Francesco.
La stesura è considerata quasi del tutto autografa. La figura del Santo, in questo scomparto, è conservata meglio rispetto alle precedenti in quanto la veste monacale è, completamente, eseguita “a fresco” mentre, per eseguire la veste azzurra con cui era stato raffigurato fino a quel momento, il lapislazzuli veniva steso a secco, in modo da economizzare la polvere preziosa.
