THE PRAYERS IN ST. DAMIAN  
According to the ancient legend, St. Francis, praying in front of the Crucifix, hears a voice that implores him to repair a house that is slowly falling down. The building represented here is the demolished church of St. Damian in Assisi and the Franciscans interpreted it as an appeal to rebuild the church itself. The placing of the architectural foreshortening seems to reveal an anticipation of Giotto’s more mature spatial language.

LA PREGHIERA IN SAN DAMIANO
Secondo l’antica leggenda S. Francesco, pregando davanti al Crocifisso, sente una voce che lo esorta più volte a riparare una certa casa che pian piano sta andando in rovina. L’edificio qui raffigurato rappresenta la diruta chiesa di San Damiano presso Assisi e i commentatori francescani interpretarono il fatto come un’esortazione alla ricostruzione della chiesa stessa.
L’impostazione di scorcio dell’architettura raffigurata sembra rilevare un’anticipazione del linguaggio spaziale del Giotto più maturo.
