ST. FRANCIS HONOURED BY AN ORDINARY MAN 
The man in this scene is an ordinary man from Assisi, hanging up washing in front of St. Francis and, in this way, honouring him as he passes.
The placement of this first episode at the end of the chronological order of the cycle has been widely accepted by critics. 
The true identity of the artist is uncertain and there are indications of the collaboration of a helper, identified as the “Maestro of the Crucifix of Montefalco” showing an affinity in style in this fresco and the final ones on the opposite wall, that have been attributed to this unknown artist.

SAN FRANCESCO ONORATO DA UN UOMO SEMPLICE
Nella scena si vede un uomo semplice di Assisi mentre stende le vesti davanti a S. Francesco, rendendogli in questo modo omaggio mentre passava.
Questo primo episodio nell’ordine del racconto si suole collocare tra gli ultimi per cronologia esecutiva, parere largamente accettato dalla critica.
L’autografia del dipinto non è assoluta, è stata, infatti, spesso riconosciuta la collaborazione di un aiuto, che si suole identificare con il “Maestro della Santa Cecilia” o con il “Maestro del Crocifisso di Montefalco”, sulla base di affinità stilistiche di questo affresco con gli ultimi della parete di fronte, i quali appunto, sono stati generalmente attribuiti, quasi totalmente, a questo pittore sconosciuto.
