POMEGRANATE Curiosities and significance: The pomegranate is well-known to bring prosperity and fecundity. Scientific name: Punica
granatum L. Common name:
Family: Punicee Characteristics:
The
pomegranate is a shrub or small tree with an elegant form cultivated
from ancient times for the consumption of its sweetly tart fruit. It has
small, perishable fruit, bright
green in colour and oval in shape with highly perfumed flowers. Place
of origin, habitat and exposure: Perhaps originally from Persia but for a long time grown in the whole of
the Mediterranean basin, the pomegranate may be cultivated where the
temperature in winter does not go below –10° centigrade. The plant
adapts to any type of soil but especially in the north of Italy, it
requires a sheltered position and full sunlight. Colour
of flowers: Orange-red
but also orange-yellow or orange streaked with white, these are the
colours of pomegranate flowers that can be single or double or in groups
of two or three. Period of flowering: Flowers bloom when the climate is very hot in May or June. Fruit:
The
pomegranate fruit is a large berry with a smooth, leathery skin that
contains an infinite number of seeds with their Cultivation:
The
rules for growing pomegranate are simple: fertilise and water the soil
regularly from spring to the end of August and prune well at the end of
winter to let air and light enter the plant.
To
prevent the berries from splitting their skin, bend the stalk to limit
the flow of lymph in September. Reproduction:
The method
most used is to break off the bud that often grows at the base of the
main plant. Talea may also be used in spring or cover a low branch with
soil and within a year a new plant is obtained by layering. Possible uses: The seeds in the pomegranate fruit may be used to prepare a refreshing “pomegranate syrup”.
