THE
CANONISATION OF SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA
On
June 29th, 1461 Pope Pious II with a solemn ceremony decreed
the canonisation of the Saint.
Unfortunately the scene is divided in two separate and unconnected parts.
The upper part portrays the true ceremony in the presence of the mortal
remains of the Saint. Below is a series of bored people assisting the
event.
Unfounded
but diffused is the belief that the Master wanted to portray Raffaello
Sanzio as the young man at the bottom on the left and himself beside.
These two fashionably-dressed figures painted with such beauty and
gentle features as to be considered the most beautiful in the cycle and
compensates the inexpressive opacity of the other figures.

1461, decreta, con cerimonia solenne, la canonizzazione della Santa.
Purtroppo, la scena è divisa
in due parti, separate e non comunicanti. In quella superiore è
raffigurata la cerimonia vera e propria, alla presenza delle spoglie
della Santa. Sotto, sono raffigurati una serie di personaggi che
assistono, oziosi, all’evento.
Diffusa,
ma non fondata, è la credenza che il Maestro abbia voluto raffigurare,
nel giovane in basso a sinistra, Raffaello Sanzio e, in quello accanto,
se stesso. Queste due figure, con
vesti alla moda, sono raffigurate con una tale bellezza e gentilezza di
lineamenti da essere considerate tra le più belle del ciclo e tali da
compensare l’opacità inespressiva degli altri personaggi. |
