THE
CORONATION OF POPE PIOUS II
The
Pope appears in the scene, placed on his throne beneath the canopy with
the Piccolomini coat of arms, intent on taking possession of the Lateran
Basilica and facing him is the Sexton who is burning a piece of cloth
whilst pronouncing the admonishment ritual .
The only note of colour inside the gloomy nave comes from a sheath of
transversal light that illuminates the white headdress of the bishops,
placed in the centre of the scene in an acute geometric composition.
Despite
the various qualitative balance caused by the hands of others, some
elements are worth noticing such as the head of the Pope, depicted with
his pale and hollow cheeks, almost as if to show the difficult
conditions of his health at the age of forty-five and the portrait of
the man standing on the right. Thanks to the unity of the composition
this fresco re-created by Pintoriccchio with the use of light represents
one of the best moments in the artistic career of the Master.

PIO II
Nella scena si vede il
Papa, raffigurato sulla sedia gestatoria, sotto il baldacchino con le
armi piccolominèe, intento a prendere possesso della Basilica
Lateranense e, dinanzi a lui, il Sacrista che dà fuoco ad un batuffolo
di stoffa e pronuncia il rituale ammonimento.
L’unica nota vivace di
colore, all’interno dell’oscura navata, è procurata da un fascio di
luce traversa che illumina i bianchi copricapo dei vescovi, posti al
centro della scena, in un’arguta composizione geometrica.
Nonostante i vari scompensi qualitativi, causati dalla mano degli aiuti, vi sono alcuni elementi
degni di nota, come la testa del Pontefice, raffigurato con le guance
pallide e scarne, quasi a mostrare le cattive condizioni di salute in
cui si trovava già all’età di quarantacinque anni, e il ritratto
dell’uomo in piedi sulla destra.
L’affresco,
grazie alla sua unità compositiva e all’atmosfera, ricreata dal
Pintoricchio con l’uso della luce, rappresenta uno dei momenti
migliori nella carriera stilistica del Maestro. |
