SILVIO SWEARS OBEDIENCE TO EUGENE IV
Federico
III ordered Piccolomini to travel to Pope Eugene IV in order at to
discuss a treatise to re-establish diplomatic relations between the
Roman Church and the German court.
The scene shows Enea Silvio kneeling to the Pope and kissing his feet
whilst he is absolved and blessed.
Probably due to the theme treated, this painting appears poor and rather
dry within the composition. Everything is monotonous and the figures
appear lifeless especially the two awkward cardinals at the front with
their backs towards the observer.
Fortunately
all is saved by some portraits that the Master, with his interpretive
ability, managed to fill with great expression.

Federico III delega il
Piccolomini a recarsi dal Papa Eugenio IV, avendo la necessitą di
concordare con lui un trattato per ristabilire le relazioni diplomatiche
tra la Chiesa romana e la Corte tedesca.
La scena mostra Enea Silvio
che, mentre si sottomette al Pontefice baciandogli il piede, viene
assolto e benedetto.
Il dipinto risulta, sempre a causa del tema trattato, povero e piuttosto
arido nello schema compositivo. Tutto sembra monotono e le figure dei
personaggi quasi senza vita, soprattutto i due goffi cardinali
raffigurati di schiena in primo piano.
Il
tutto viene riscattato, fortunatamente, da alcuni ritratti che il
Maestro, con la sua abilitą interpretativa, riesce a dotare di una
grande espressivitą. |
