This is the first page of the treatise De Animalibus by Alberto Magno. It contains five miniatures that are usually attributed to Francesco di Giorgio.
To the left at the top is a young seated woman in front of whom a unicorn is kneeling whilst to her right a griffon is sitting. In the background the landscape consist of a row of rather unusual trees, hills and a stretch of water with barely visible sailing boats.
The three round objects to the right represent the three trials of Hercules, from the top: Hercules and the lion of Nemea, Hercules and the Hydra of Lerna and Hercules and the centaur Nesso.
Below are two genii that support the coats of arms of Alessandro da Sermoneta, a doctor and professor at the University of Siena.
The woman presents the typical female face painted by Francesco with its high and wide cheeks, fine, arched eyebrows and fleshy chin.

Questa è la prima pagina del trattato De Animalibus di Alberto Magno. Contiene cinque miniature che vengono, generalmente, attribuite a Francesco di Giorgio.
In alto a sinistra una giovane donna seduta, di fronte alla quale si inchina un liocorno, mentre alla sua destra è seduto un grifone. Sullo sfondo, un paesaggio costituito da una fila d’alberi dall’aspetto piuttosto inconsueto, colline e una distesa d’acqua con imbarcazioni a vela appena visibili.
I tre tondi sulla destra rappresentano le tre fatiche di Ercole, dall’alto: Ercole e il leone di Nemea, Ercole e l’Idra di Lerna, Ercole e il centauro Nesso.
In basso, due geni portastemmi, i quali reggono lo stemma di Alessandro da Sermoneta, medico e professore dell’Università di Siena.
La donna presenta il tipico volto femminile di Francesco, zigomi alti e larghi, arcate sopraccigliari fini e mento carnoso.
