in the Garden of Gethsemane (1502)
Together
with the “Vocation of Saint Matthew” this painting was part of a gift to a rich doner, whose coat of arms appears
on both canvasses. Intentionally archaic in its form recalling Mantegna and the first Giovanni Bellini, this painting
contains an absolute novelty in the use of colour such as the red in Christ’s robe and the distance between the
foreground which appears illuminated by soldier’s torches as
they advance and the background at dusk which covers the city in the distance.Even Peter’s realistically
crossed legs as he lies on a slope are a characteristic which had not yet been seen in paintings of this period. |

Getsemani (1502)
Questo dipinto fa parte, assieme alla Vocazione di S. Matteo, di un omaggio a un ricco donatore, il cui stemma appare in entrambe le tele.
Volutamente arcaico nello schema che ricorda Mantegna e il primo Giovanni Bellini, contiene delle novità assolute
nell’uso del colore, come il rosso della veste del Cristo e lo stacco tra il primo piano che appare illuminato dalle
torce dei soldati in avvicinamento e lo sfondo crepuscolare che avvolge la città in lontananza. Anche le gambe
realisticamente incrociate di Pietro, sdraiato oltretutto su un pendio, sono un particolare che ancora non si era
visto nella pittura dell’epoca. |
