raffinatissime Sibille che nel pergamo pistoiese pausano l'acuta
tensione degli archetti gotici in affusolati ritmi lineari, di una
musicalitą pacata - accentuata dalla levigata trasparenza delle
superfici - sono indubbiamente fra le creazioni pił alte del Gotico
italiano e rivelano nel Pisano una perfetta conoscenza della cultura
artistica europea pił avanzata. Le superfici, quasi morbida cera,
sembrano plasmarsi solo in virtł del soffio della luce, che con il suo
battito folgorante isola le immagini, accentuandone le straordinarie
possibilitą emotive. |

The highly refined sibyls that break the
sharp tension of the Pistoia pulpit with their tapering linear rhythms
are undoubtedly among the highest creations of Italian Gothic. Giovanni
Pisano was evidently completely aware of the most advanced European
artistic trends of his day. The stone, seeming to resemble soft wax,
takes shape only by virtue of the light, which isolates the figures and
brings out their extraordinary emotional quality.
