The involved controversy over the degree of participation by Pietro
Bernini in his son's youthful work now seems to be resolved. There is no
doubt that this group represents a decisive break with the academic
formalism of the cinquecento,
and shows precisely the great influence that the lessons of
Hellenistic sculpture will have on the formation of the new Baroque
idiom, from both the narrative and emotional standpoint.
