Il «bronzetto» è un genere di scultura che particolarmente si presta a testimoniare l'aspetto erudito del classicismo umanistico, a Firenze, a Padova, a Venezia; e Bertoldo, allievo di Donatello, rappresenta in modo tipico il processo di riduzione «museale» della rivoluzionaria poesia del Maestro. In opere come questa il prototipo greco è ripreso con straordinaria maestria tecnica e stilistica, ma non recuperato ad un significato «moderno». Anzi, bellissimo «oggetto di devozione ad uso degli umanisti» della corte medicea, esemplifica il principio della «reintegrazione consapevole delle immagini antiche nelle forme antiche» (André Chastel).

The “little bronze” is a type of sculpture that particularly lends itself to testify the scholarly  aspect of humanistic classicism in Florence, Padova and Venice and Bertoldo, one of Donatello’s students, represents the process of reduction by the revolutionary poetry of the Maestro in a typical way. In works such as this, the Greek prototype is portrayed with extraordinary technical and stylistic skill but it does not acquire a “modern” significance. On the contrary, the beautiful “object of devotion used by the humanists” at the Medici court was an example of the principle of “known reintegration of antique images in antique form” (André Chastel).
