Donatello     La consegna delle chiavi

Oltre agli effetti di concentrazione plastico-spaziale Donatello aveva dato allo stiacciato la funzione creativa di effetti di continuum atmosferico, di profondità illimitata che il digradare dei piani sottili riconduce a unità visiva. In questo stupendo rilievo, fondamentale esempio, durante tutto il Quattrocento, per pittori come Filippo Lippi (così come gli affreschi masacceschi), è riassunta in vibrazione luminosa l'organica armonia di rapporti tra realtà dello spazio e realtà dei volumi.

Apart from his spacial-plastic effects, Donatello gave his relief the creative function of a continual, atmospheric effect, of unlimited profundity that descended gradually from fine surfaces to a visual unity. The painter Filippo Lippi considers this marvellous relief, a fundamental example of the 14th century together with the frescoes by Masaccio, to be the luminous vibrations of an organic harmony of the relationship between the reality of space and that of volume.
