Anche
nel «genere» tradizionale del busto-reliquiario, Donatello porta il
suo spirito rinnovatore. Come per i Profeti, egli crea un ritratto
ideale del Santo, accentuando, nella scelta del personaggio, il
carattere profano - un gentiluomo guerriero -, si da rendere la
religiosità e la sacralità come valori etici, di esperienza sofferta
nella vita, di nobiltà conquistata nella saggezza.

Donatello also applied his renewing spirit to the
traditional “type” of bust-relic statues. He created an ideal portrait of
the Saint, as he had with the Prophets, emphasising in his choice, the profane
character of a gentleman-warrior, rendering the religiousness and the sacred
as ethic values, of experiences suffered during life and nobility conquered by
wisdom.
