Altro esempio di interpretazione rinnovatrice degli esemplari antichi, questa testa, che par configurarsi nei moduli di aulica semplicità del classicismo gotico, li anima invece di uno spirito realistico assolutamente inedito. Non più nobile sigla formale, come la testa del David marmoreo, e nemmeno immagine naturalistico-descrittiva:  ma simbolo incarnato in un ideale ritratto, individuato non tanto fisionomicamente quanto psicologicamente.

This head is an admirable example of the new interpretation of ancient models. Although shaped in the style of the courtly simplicity of Gothic classicism, it is animated by a realistic spirit never before seen. It is not a noble abbreviation of form, like the head of Donatello's earlier marble David, nor is it a naturalistic or descriptive image, but the symbol incarnate of an ideal portrait, individualized not so much in feature as psychologically.
