Towards the end of the 16th
century in 1589 during the pontificate of Sisto V Peretti (1585-1590), Giacomo della Porta created the harmonious
fountain in Piazza d’Arcacoeli with four putti at the top pouring water from the amphorae in their hands.
When the fountain at the foot of
Campidoglio was restored in the 19th century the actual circular one replaced the large original oval basin.
Also removed were the two steps that surround the basin included not to make it easy to reach the water but to make the
fountain seem to emerge from the water of the wide oval basin.
Verso la fine del Cinquecento, nel 1589, durante il
pontificato di Sisto V Peretti (1585-1590), Giacomo della Porta realizzò l'armoniosa fontana di piazza d'Aracoeli,
sulla sommità della quale quattro putti, volgendosi le spalle, versano acqua da altrettante anfore che reggono in mano.
Nel corso di un restauro ottocentesco alla fontana, sita ai piedi del Campidoglio, il grande bacino originario di
forma ovaleggiante è stato sostituito con l'attuale bacino circolare; allora vennero rimossi anche i due gradini
modellati secondo le linee della vasca sovrastante voluti dal progettista non per chi intendesse attingere l'acqua, ma
come piedistallo per la fontana che appariva emergere dalle acque dell'ampio bacino
ovaleggiante.
