agave macroacantha

Scientific name: Agave macroacantha Zucc.
Family: Agavaceae
Habitat.: Mexico ( Tehuan, Oaxaca) where it grows in rocky, very arid terrain.

Description:

The rosette is composed of many narrow, grey-blue leaves, 25-35 cms. long. The edges of the leaves have short, dark brown, serrated thorns whilst the tip has a thick, whitish brown thorn of about 3 cms. The inflorescence is made up of a 2 metre stem with lateral branches which hold groups of violet-green flowers. Often after the flowering there appear “ small bulbs”( already formed tiny plants) which fall to the ground, giving life to a new colony of Agaves.

Cultivation:

Plant in deep soil where the climate is suitable ( coastal zones and islands). Plant in pots where during the winter temperatures drop below zero. It is better to use wide vases which allow space for the roots of the Agave macroacantha to grow. Every two years the pots should be changed, shortening the roots and eliminating the buds which suck the goodness from the plant, limiting its growth. As with all Agaves, water well during spring and summer and add potassium-rich fertiliser.

Reproduction: Obtained through sowing, budding or from bulbs.
