KHORAKERT
/ Xlllth century
The
monastery is located on the southern slope of Mt. Lalvar in a zone of
thick vegetation along the border of Armenia and Georgia. The polygonal
wall encloses several chapels; the main nucleus is composed of the
church with its gavit.
The church which is of the domed hall type has an interesting drum
pierced at the base by numerous narrow openings. These are separated by
polygonal pilasters linked by small shell-shaped arches. The dome is
subdivided by six ribs composed of crossed arches.
The gavit built in 1252 is larger than the church. It was roofed over by
four intersecting arches. A few years ago all that remained of this roof
were the main ribs and part of the lantern.
