Asia, in particular India, Indonesia and Java but also New Zealand are where these pretty and rustic plants originate
and have become in recent years a well-liked indoor plant.
Description:
The
Schefflera is a small bush with a woody but soft stem that tends to bend and should therefore be supported. It also
has groups of beautiful, vertical, oval-shaped leaves that develop from the same nodule. The shiny leaves may be
plain green or variagated and should be kept clean. The general aspect of the plant, however, remains one of
lightness and despite a rich foliage it does not seem heavy or dark.
Cultivation:
Adaptability to the most varied conditions is a characteristic of the Schefflera, a resistent plant that is easy to
grow and likes good light. It should be placed outside during the hot months but out of direct sunlight. Originally
from hot countries, the plant does not like low temperatures and it is necessary that the thermometre never drops
below 10°C.
The
Schefflera prefers a soft soil with modest and regular watering although it tolerates eventual periods of drought but
the roots dislike water retention intensly.
During the period of repose this plant should be fertilised monthly.
Reproduction:
Reproduction occurs by talea at the beginning of spring. The Schefflera may also be reproduced by margotte. This
system should be used at the onset of summer and the time for the roots to grow varies from two to three months.
Usually this method of reproduction is reserved for specialists but it may, however, be tried with some probability
of success.

Descrizione:
La
Schefflera si presenta come un piccolo arbusto dai fusti legnosi ma morbidi, che tendono a piegarsi e talora vanno
sostenuti con tutori, e dalle belle foglie ovaliformi verticillate, cioè riunite in gruppi che si sviluppano dal
medesimo nodo. Le foglie, lucenti, possono essere di colore verde unito o variegato e amano essere mantenute pulite.
L'aspetto generale della pianta comunica leggerezza: il fogliame pur ricco non è mai d'aspetto pesante né cupo.
Coltivazione:
La grande adattabilità
alle più varie condizioni di vita è caratteristica della Schefflera, pianta resistente e facile da coltivare che
gradisce buona luce e ama stare all'aperto nei mesi caldi, però al riparo dai raggi solari. Originaria di paesi
caldi la pianta non sopporta le basse temperature: è necessario che il termometro non scenda mai sotto i 10°.
La Schefflera ama un terreno
soffice e apprezza innaffiature modeste e regolari, tollera senza risentirne eventuali periodi di siccità ma le sue
radici temono decisamente i ristagni d'acqua.
Nel periodo vegetativo questa pianta gradisce una concimazione mensile.
Moltiplicazione:
La riproduzione avviene
per talea da effettuarsi all'inizio della primavera, in aprile; la Schefflera si può anche propagare per margotta,
questo sistema va praticato all'inizio dell'estate e il tempo per la radicazione varia dai due ai tre mesi.
Solitamente queste pratiche riproduttive sono riservate agli specialisti, ma si possono comunque tentare con qualche
probabilità di successo.
